Palo Alto, CA -- A driver died after his vehicle went off the road and struck a tree near San Antonio Road and Middlefield Road this morning.

At about 8:05 a.m. on Monday, September 3, 2012, officers from the Palo Alto Police Department responded to a report of a major accident on the 4200 block of Middlefield Road, just south of San Antonio Road.  Upon arrival, they found that a single vehicle with a solo occupant had crashed into a tree.  Personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department pronounced the driver, an adult male, dead at the scene.

The initial investigation shows that the victim's car was traveling northbound on Middlefield Road approaching the intersection at San Antonio Road. The vehicle appears to have drifted into the southbound lanes and onto the sidewalk, where it then struck a tree.  No other vehicles were involved in this incident, and no other people were injured.

Police shut down vehicle traffic on the 4200 block of Middlefield Road for about 5 ½ hours, while officers from the Palo Alto Police Department’s Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team investigated the incident.  Santa Clara County Valley Transit Authority bus line #35 was rerouted during the road closure.

Police believe it is possible the driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the accident.  The actual cause of death will be determined by personnel from the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.  Police do not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor.  Police are not releasing the identity of the victim, pending notification of his family.
